What is strees ?

We often hear that people are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, pressured or rushed either by their daily routine, school or office work, relationships or as a result of a specific incident. People react differently to different situations and the way they manage their responses has a lot to do with their mental well-being and happiness. Stress is a result of chemical hormones that our body produces when it feels threatened or presented with real or perceived complex or uncertain situations.

"Stress is not what happens to us.
It is our response TO what happens.
And RESPONSE is something we can choose."
Maureen Killoran

In simple terms, stress is a reaction or response to any kind of change. It is the physical and emotional response to situations, which are perceived as new, frightening, confusing, exciting or tiring. Stress does not necessarily get precipitated by external demands, but can also be generated from within by our hopes, fears, expectations and beliefs. It acts like a signal for the mind and body to prepare itself for any eventuality.

Once a situation has been assessed as demanding or frustrating, it will trigger off a reaction, which has a mental, emotional, physical and behavioral component. Or, in other words, whenever you are under stress, you may have some physical and mental symptoms. Your mood and behaviour is likely to be affected. However, the intensity of the stress-response may vary from one person to another.

You may have noticed that some people are usually more dissatisfied with their surroundings than others and complain about things that happen to them. This is the most obvious sign of being stressed, but it is not the only sign. Many people bottle up their problems and find it difficult to talk about unpleasant situations, and this makes it very important to identify your stress level before it takes a toll on your health.

Why texting while driving is dangerous

Research found that sending SMS on a mobile phone is riskier than talking

Texters in a driving simulator had more crashes, responded more slowly to brake lights
The reaction time increased by 30 per cent when texting; 9 per cent when they talked over phone

A timely study in the journal Human Factors suggests why texting (sending SMS on a mobile phone) while driving is riskier than talking on a cell phone or with another passenger.

Human factors/ergonomics researchers at the University of Utah found that texters in a driving simulator had more crashes, responded more slowly to brake lights on cars in front of them, and showed impairment in forward and lateral control than did dr ivers who talked on a cell phone while driving or drove without texting.

The evidence

Researchers Frank Drews and colleagues found evidence that attention patterns differ for drivers who text versus those who converse on a cell phone.

In the latter case, the researchers say, "drivers apparently attempt to divide attention between a phone conversation and driving, adjusting the processing priority of the two activities depending on task demands." But texting requires drivers to switch their attention from one task to the other.

Slower reaction time

When such attention-switching occurs as drivers compose, read, or receive a text, their overall reaction times are substantially slower than when they’re engaged in a phone conversation.

The type of texting activity also appears to make a difference; in this study, reading messages affected braking times more than did composing them.

The hazards of texting while driving continue to receive broad national and international attention as accident rates attributed to this practice increase.

As a result, a growing number of U.S. cities and states, as well as Canadian provinces, ban texting while operating a vehicle. Drews et al. noted that according to CTIA , more than 1 trillion text messages were sent in 2008 in the United States alone.

Results quantified

To find why and how much drivers are impaired during texting, the researchers engaged 20 men and 20 women between the ages of 19 and 23 in both a single task (straight driving) and a dual task (driving and texting) in a high-fidelity simulator.

The participants, experienced texters with an average of 4.75 years of driving experience, received and sent messages while the researchers observed their brake onset time, following distance, lane maintenance, and collisions.

Delayed reaction

The crash risk attributable to texting is substantial. One possible explanation is that drivers who text tend to decrease their minimum following distance and also experience delayed reaction time.

For example, in the Drews et al. study, drivers’ median reaction time increased by 30 per cent when they were texting and 9 per cent when they talked on the phone, compared with their performance in a driving-only condition.

Notwithstanding the safety risk of texting while driving, previous research by Drews and colleagues at the University of Utah - not to mention crash data and widespread legislation - makes clear that using a phone while driving is dangerous.

Bid to promote scientific aptitude

The Union Science and Technology Department will soon launch an 'Inspire' scheme to promote scientific vision and aptitude among school children. A task force is being constituted for the purpose. This was disclosed by the Union science and technology secretary, T Ramaswami in a meeting with the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr Ashok Gehlot on November 18,2009.
According to the scheme, in each secondary school one meritorious science student would be selected under the scheme to prepare a scientific project and they would be given a cash award of Rs 5,000 to prepare it. The selected students would be given an opportunity to participate at a national level exhibition. Centre has decided to select 2,000 students every year under the scheme.
Besides this, those students who score the highest marks in science in Class X would be selected for special orientation camp during summer and winter vacations under 'Inspire internship'. The government would give them opportunity to interact with noted scientists, professors, and other dignitaries. they would also get opportunities to interact with Nobel laureates.

Key facts about Tobacco

  • Avoiding tobacco adds 20 years to the life of a teenager.
  • In India, 900,000 people die due to tobacco related diseases per year.
  • In India The tobacco contributes to 56.4% and 44.9% of cancers in men and women, respectively.
  • India has the largest number of oral cancer cases in the world which is due to tobacco.
  • Tobacco smoking accounts for 82% of Chronic obstructive lung disease in India.
  • Tobacco indirectly causes lung tuberculosis. Prevalence of TB is about 3 times as great among the ever-smokers as among the never-smokers. The heavier the smoking, either cigarettes or bidis, the greater the prevalence of TB among smokers. Mortality from TB is 3 to 4 times as great in ever-smokers as in never-smokers.
  • About half of the teenagers who use tobacco will eventually be killed by it (about a quarter in middle age and a quarter in old age).
  • It is estimated that India as compared to any other country will have the fastest rise in tobacco related deaths each year.

Reasons to save trees !

  • Trees clean the air: Trees help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

  • Trees are Effective Sound Barriers: Trees are as effective as stonewalls in stopping sound. They muffle urban noise almost as effectively as stonewalls. Trees, planted at strategic points in a neighbourhood or around your house, can mitigate major noises from crowded roads, railway stations and airports.
  • Trees Produce Oxygen: A mature leafy tree, in a few months, produces as much oxygen as that required by 10 people for one year.
  • Trees become dustbins for harmful gases: a tree absorbs and locks away carbon dioxide, and other harmful gases which warm the environment. An urban forest is a carbon storage area that can lock up as much carbon.
  • Trees Shade and Cool: Shade from trees reduces the need for fan, coolers and air conditioning in summer. Studies have shown that parts of cities without cooling shade from trees can literally be "heated islands," with temperatures as much as 4-6 degrees Celsius higher than surrounding areas. In winter, trees break the force of winter winds.
  • Trees Act as Windbreaks: trees break the force of the wind. This protects houses, farmland and vegetation.
  • Trees Fight Soil Erosion: Trees fight soil erosion, conserve rainwater, and reduce water runoff and sediment deposit after storms.
  • Trees help in lowering the dust levels and pollution levels in the cities.
  • Trees decrease respiratory problems: Children staying in areas and localities with trees have much less breathing problems that children staying in localities which have no trees.
  • Trees are a essential part of our culture and tradition. There are many trees and plants which we worship for e.g. Peepal, Tulsi.

MINIMUM EFFORTS MAXIMUM RETURNS

Many a times i have found students with a general complain that they study a lot, they do a lot of hard work, but even then they r not able to score very good marks. On the other hand many students r there who don't seem to be very hard working; they can be found very often playing in the field, spending most of their time surfing the net etc. Even then they score higher marks than what a general student scores. So what's there that makes such a difference. Here are a few tips which i feel can make a lot of difference.

1. If we look forward to a student's daily routine now-a-days, near about 10 to 12 hours of a students daily life is dedicated to so called studies. Normally a student gives 6 hours to school, two to three hours to tuition and about one or one and half hours to complete the homework. But how many hours does the student really study. Study means when someone is learning something. Being in school or tutions or doing homework doesn't ensures that a student is learning.

2. Doing homework now a days means that a student is just copying the answers of the questions given for homework. The basic concept of homework is, that the student must be able to answer the questions on the basis of what he/she has learnt in the school. He/she should not take the help of any book, guidebook or anything extra for answering these questions.

3. Many a times i have felt that the students who r present in the class r just physically present, mentally they r not. Its clear from their facial expression, about how much r they understanding. One of the reason behind this can be the way the things r presented in front of them. But that is just an excuse. The most important thing is that one has to be very attentive in the class. In the class our eyes should work as an scanner and ears as recorder, they should record each and every thing tought in the class, and should store them in mind in such a way that the student can bring out the print whenever he/she wants.

4. Many students complain that they don't get interest in the topic, thats why they r not able to concentrate in the class. For them the best solution is, before entering in the class u should know what topic the teacher is going to discuss that day. U must atleast have an overlook of the topic before entering in the class. That will give u an idea of what u r going to study in the class. In the class one has to be very attentive. Class is the best place one can learn. At home whenever u study, only one mind is working on that topic, it only thinks in a particular way. But in a class so many minds r working, they can raisedifferent types of questions and that can help u thinking in a alternative way also. May be that will make u understand things better. Whenever u have a doubt u get it cleared, or pen it down so that it can be cleared later on .

5. Whatever u have learned in the class, make sure u revise it the same day, if not same day atleast the same week. Go through the chapters and read fast. Grab important points and make notes of them. For making notes, get a blank piece of paper and outline the material you need to study. This helps develop a "big picture" overview of the material. Start with big topics and leave room for subtopics. Fill in the information as best as u can. Once u see all the units of information in front of you it will be easier to organize your studies. U must make notes of all topics in such a way that it must cover the complete topic in the simplest and shortest way, so that whenever u get time u don't have to go for the complete topic, u just go through ur notes and the complete topic is through.

6. One of my teachers used to tell us, that preparation for exams is just like polishing something. It doesn't matters how much polish u put on, the thing which matters is how much u brush that. The more u brush, the more it will shine. The same thing is applicable with studies also, studying more and more is of no use, if u r not able to recall the previous one on right time. So keep on revising the previous topics time and again.

7. Use unconventional methods for studying that will make ur studies more interesting and understandable. Using internet for study material, visiting local public library, and having group discussion with friends will help you learn things quickly.

8. Normally we prefer to study subjects of our interests rather than the subjects in which we r not interested. We must keep in mind that all subjects carry equal wieghtage. if we work very hard in one or two subject and leave the rest that will ensure u good marks in those particular subjects only, but what about the rest. Recurring low marks in these subjects make us hate the subject even more. What u need to do in such a situation is make an analysis of the subject, see what all types of questions are generally asked in the exams and prepare so that u have to do the minimum work in that particular subject, that will assure u of good marks.

9. While preparing the subjects which have numerical problems, solve them using pen and paper; reading through them is just a wastage of time. When u solve a numerical on paper only then u come to know the actual problem and its solution. That makes u understand that problem much easier.

10. Always be a part of a friend circle, where u get lots of opportunities to learn. Its not that u always have to be a part of a studious group, but whatever group u join should be an constructive one. A positive environment always creates positive opportunities.

All the best for ur studies

Answer Key of 3rd International Mathematics Olympiad (10-12-09)

Hey Students !!!

A Great News for all of You..

Answer key of 3rd International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO-SOF) is available at www.pccp.resonance.ac.in

Now we can evalute our result immediately........... Njoy !!!!!

National Science Olympiad - NSO'09 messed up

NSO - 19th November -09

The National Science Olympiad was scheduled to be conducted on 19th November all over India...but the fact is that it was conducted after 19th november also in Jaipur,Rajasthan as some schools were closed due to swine flu while the paper was not distributed to the students.

So the authenticity and credibility of SOF ( Science Olympiad Foundation ) is in question.
Are these organization's are working just with the aim of making money out of students..or what.

By taking exam this way the desirable candidate may not be rewarded against the one who already knows the paper.

This information should be shared with as many people as possible so next time a student must rethink before registering for these exams.

How to Prepare for Board Exams

As the year comes to an end, and the month of January is approaching, most of the students specially those appearing for Class X and XII get worried about their preparation for Board exams. For the students of class X, its more problematic as they are appearing for the board exams for the first time. Our traditional study pattern somewhere says that the future of an individual depends upon his / her performance in the class X board exams. If you have secured first division in class X you can opt for Science stream, II division marks and you can have Commerce stream and less than that can have only Humanities. That increases the pressure to a great extent. As far as students of class XII are concerned they can think of relaxing a bit as they have an experience of the board exams but they can not relax as they not only have to appear in the board exams but also immediately after that they have to appear in various competitive exams as IIT-JEE, AIEEE, PMT, CPMT etc. So here are a few tips on my behalf which I think can help the students in overcoming the stress they generally feel during these months.
1. Most probably u would have completed the required syllabus by this time, or would have been on verge of completion. If not then definitely u r running short of time. Try to finish your syllabus as fast as u can otherwise u don’t have any time for revision.
2. Don’t wait for the syllabus to be completed at your school, coaching centres or other tuition centres. Its basically you who have to appear in the exams, not the teacher who is teaching u. In the last moment, they will cover the syllabus anyhow but u would be not in a position to cope up with the supersonic speed by which they cover the syllabus
3. Other than completing the syllabus, revision of the previous chapters is a must. Normally in classes other than X and XII, the result of that class is generally made on the basis of the students performance throughout the year (monthly test, quarterly, half-yearly & final exams). In the board exams though practical or internal evaluation marks r there but they contribute only a little, most of the marks come from the main exams that would be held in the month of March and that would be covering the complete syllabi. So keep on revising the previous chapters or u would collapse under the burden of total syllabus.
4. Knowing the pattern of board exams is a must for everyone; Normally we create such an hype of the board exams that the student is not able to overcome the stress. But if u know the pattern of the exam, it becomes very simple. Just visit the site of CBSE i.e. www.cbse.nic.in & the complete information about the design of the paper, weightage of the content, unit-wise division of questions, weightage to difficulty level, scheme of options etc. near about everything required to prepare for the exam is provided. Even sample papers issued by CBSE r available and one can go through these papers and check his / her preparation about the exam.
5. January and February are the months when one must go for more and more practise papers. U know the saying "practise makes a man perfect.’ Just be on any internet search engine, ask for CBSE sample papers and it opens a whole new world for u. Be in contact with ur friends and keep looking for any new paper which they might have. Collect and analyze previous years question papers and study accordingly but keep a track of the syllabus also, as these days the syllabus is being frequently changed by the CBSE.
6. While practising any paper if u face problems, don’t get depressed, but on the other hand analyse ur performance and keep a track of the areas where u r lacking. After that emphasize on those areas specially where u r lacking.
7. Keep a record of the notes made by u in the classes. Stress more on concept rather than their ellaboration. Now a days board teachers while checking ur copy don’t look for the words but they definetly look for the meaning and theme of ur answer, whether u know the concept or not matters a lot rather then ur expression.
8. Don’t get overstressed or get yourself exhausted. Read only that much which u can digest. I generally belief that our mind is a super computer with an unlimited memory, we can store as much as we want in this computer, but the thing is one must be able to recall at the last moment the file in which one has put the material he/she has prepared. The problem is that under the stress of exam, in the examination hall even this super computer gets hanged and than u cant help it. If u r not able to recall the material at the time its required, u get frustrated and the depression sets in.
9. Don’t get depressed if u dont remeber the points, depression is just like a pond filled with mud, the more u try to get out, the more u r drowned in it. If u r in a examination room the best suggestion to cope up with this problem is to leave that problem and jump to the other one. While preparing for the exams if u suffer from the problem of depression, the best way is to have a good rest. Go for a movie of ur interest, listen to music, chat with friends on any other thing which u like the most & the time u get re-energised get back to study.
10. Few things can improve your grades easily. They are clarity, good presentation, time management during exam sessions, explanation with diagrams and graphs rather than paragraphs of theory and writing answers you know properly first. While checking the board copies i have felt that the teachers generally have a serious look on ur first few answers, if those r found perfect than chances r there that they might overlook a few mistakes made in between. Don’t waste much time on any questions which are confusing.
Once you have a game plan its time to get to work. People can suggest u various plans on how to prepare for the exams. But remember its important to come up with a system that works for u. I have heard many people saying, ‘that the life would not get over just with this exam, u would get lots of opportunity to prove yourself’. Don’t take these words as an excuse of not doing hard work. Remember the board gives u only one chance, second chance is provided to only those who get supplementary or r a failure.
If u r not satisfied with the your performancein the board exams there is no way to improve it. So analyse urself, keep a record of ur abilities, prepare well for the exams, set a goal and go for it.............. and taste Success.
All the best for your Board Exams.

Note :- The writer has a teaching experience of over 10 years in Board Classes and is a regular Evaluator of CBSE copies for the last six years.

The IIT dilemma - Old vs New

WHILE the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are still believed to be the ultimate destination for engineering students, more than 500 students have rejected the admission offer to study in one of these institutes this year. Reasons vary from not getting one's choice discipline to being hesitant about 'new IITs' and temporary campuses.

The seven 'old IITs' include Kharagpur, Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati. Eight more were added to the list and approved by the government in 2008. These IITs are mentored by the nearest old IITs.

Surendra Prasad, director, IIT-Delhi, says that the rejections should be seen in the context of new IITs. People are suspicious of the effectiveness of the new IITs. The sudden expansion has led to this kind of a situation, he explains. However, he agrees that though the pace could be a little slow, the need for an expansion was always there.

A recent ministry of human resource development (MHRD) agenda paper on the futuristic vision of IITs states that India has about 1,700 engineering educational institutions and about two million students. The number of graduates per year is about 4,00,000. In a scenario like this, the seven IITs, 20 NITs, three IIITs, and a few other institutes are not sufficient. According to the MHRD report, the only way to meet the demand is by increasing the intake of existing IITs by setting up satellite campuses of existing campuses or setting up new IITs.

As to the hesitation factor of parents and students, Prasad says, “It is important to disseminate information and we are trying our best.” What parents and students need to know is, he adds, that all these new IITs have an established IIT as their mentor. Besides, quality will not be compromised in any of these new institutes. But then, Prasad points out that in the initial years, the dilemma is likely to persist because one has to choose between an established IIT and a new one. That's a tough choice to make.

While one of the major concerns of IIT aspirants and parents seems to be the idea of temporary campuses, Rajat Chakraborty, ex-professor and former head of Jadavpur University, mechanical engineering, feels that such fears are unfounded. “The moment the first batch from any of these institutes complete their placements, students will start feeling confident.”

New Entrance Scheme Likely To Start In 2011.

Marks scored in the Plus Two board examinations are likely to become a key determining factor in addition to performance in the nervewracking Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) by 2011.

In a few months, a pan-IIT committee, formed by the Union HRD ministry to suggest reforms to JEE, is expected to submit its report recommending ways to factor in the marks scored by students in higher secondary examinations while preparing the IIT merit list. A meeting of all IIT directors and JEE representatives in Chennai over the weekend discussed the proposed changes.

“We hope to devise a methodology to compute a normalised Plus Two cut-off eligibility score for each educational board (CBSE, ICSE, and State Boards). If it's approved, then only students who have scored this cut-off mark would become eligible to appear for JEE,'' IIT Madras deputy director V G Idichandy, who is heading the committee, said on Monday.

The present eligibility norm of an aggregate score of 60% in Plus Two determined by the IIT standing council, as opposed to 85% recommended by a JEE review committee four years ago, is considered too poor a benchmark.

“We are collecting data on Plus Two results of the past four to five years from different boards in all states to base our recommendation on. Much will depend on how we compute an acceptable method to normalise the marks scored in different boards. You have nearly 40 boards of education in India,'' Prof Idichandy said.

However, the even more difficult part is to convince authorities of all the boards to declare Plus Two results within a specified time-frame every academic year.

“This will be crucial for us as we have to base JEE on Plus Two results. This is where a common school board, at least at the level of higher secondary education, which has been proposed by HRD minister Kapil Sibal, will help in determining any all-India merit list,'' he said.

Everything is Possible

Everyone has dreams when they're younger, but many people give up on them because they feel they can't ever achieve them! Well, with that attitude, they never will…

But…

It doesn't matter what your current situation is, it doesn't matter what your disabilities are, it doesn't matter what your current mindset is, you CAN change it and achieve those dreams and goals that you once had as a child.

After all, why shouldn't you? You are just as good as the next person! You're unique, have your own talents, and have so many things you can offer other people.

Remember – You can have everything you want in the world as long as you help enough people get what they want!

That's a very important quote and statement, and that's why the network marketing industry is so powerful. That's what we do… help OTHER PEOPLE get what they want!

There are NO EXCUSES. If you want something back enough, you HAVE to put everything you've got into making your life a success, and achieving those goals and dreams.......

If you've never heard of Nick Vujicic before, check www.lifewithoutlimbs.org, It just shows how ANYBODY from any walk of life can INSPIRE others…
