How to Prepare for Board Exams

As the year comes to an end, and the month of January is approaching, most of the students specially those appearing for Class X and XII get worried about their preparation for Board exams. For the students of class X, its more problematic as they are appearing for the board exams for the first time. Our traditional study pattern somewhere says that the future of an individual depends upon his / her performance in the class X board exams. If you have secured first division in class X you can opt for Science stream, II division marks and you can have Commerce stream and less than that can have only Humanities. That increases the pressure to a great extent. As far as students of class XII are concerned they can think of relaxing a bit as they have an experience of the board exams but they can not relax as they not only have to appear in the board exams but also immediately after that they have to appear in various competitive exams as IIT-JEE, AIEEE, PMT, CPMT etc. So here are a few tips on my behalf which I think can help the students in overcoming the stress they generally feel during these months.
1. Most probably u would have completed the required syllabus by this time, or would have been on verge of completion. If not then definitely u r running short of time. Try to finish your syllabus as fast as u can otherwise u don’t have any time for revision.
2. Don’t wait for the syllabus to be completed at your school, coaching centres or other tuition centres. Its basically you who have to appear in the exams, not the teacher who is teaching u. In the last moment, they will cover the syllabus anyhow but u would be not in a position to cope up with the supersonic speed by which they cover the syllabus
3. Other than completing the syllabus, revision of the previous chapters is a must. Normally in classes other than X and XII, the result of that class is generally made on the basis of the students performance throughout the year (monthly test, quarterly, half-yearly & final exams). In the board exams though practical or internal evaluation marks r there but they contribute only a little, most of the marks come from the main exams that would be held in the month of March and that would be covering the complete syllabi. So keep on revising the previous chapters or u would collapse under the burden of total syllabus.
4. Knowing the pattern of board exams is a must for everyone; Normally we create such an hype of the board exams that the student is not able to overcome the stress. But if u know the pattern of the exam, it becomes very simple. Just visit the site of CBSE i.e. www.cbse.nic.in & the complete information about the design of the paper, weightage of the content, unit-wise division of questions, weightage to difficulty level, scheme of options etc. near about everything required to prepare for the exam is provided. Even sample papers issued by CBSE r available and one can go through these papers and check his / her preparation about the exam.
5. January and February are the months when one must go for more and more practise papers. U know the saying "practise makes a man perfect.’ Just be on any internet search engine, ask for CBSE sample papers and it opens a whole new world for u. Be in contact with ur friends and keep looking for any new paper which they might have. Collect and analyze previous years question papers and study accordingly but keep a track of the syllabus also, as these days the syllabus is being frequently changed by the CBSE.
6. While practising any paper if u face problems, don’t get depressed, but on the other hand analyse ur performance and keep a track of the areas where u r lacking. After that emphasize on those areas specially where u r lacking.
7. Keep a record of the notes made by u in the classes. Stress more on concept rather than their ellaboration. Now a days board teachers while checking ur copy don’t look for the words but they definetly look for the meaning and theme of ur answer, whether u know the concept or not matters a lot rather then ur expression.
8. Don’t get overstressed or get yourself exhausted. Read only that much which u can digest. I generally belief that our mind is a super computer with an unlimited memory, we can store as much as we want in this computer, but the thing is one must be able to recall at the last moment the file in which one has put the material he/she has prepared. The problem is that under the stress of exam, in the examination hall even this super computer gets hanged and than u cant help it. If u r not able to recall the material at the time its required, u get frustrated and the depression sets in.
9. Don’t get depressed if u dont remeber the points, depression is just like a pond filled with mud, the more u try to get out, the more u r drowned in it. If u r in a examination room the best suggestion to cope up with this problem is to leave that problem and jump to the other one. While preparing for the exams if u suffer from the problem of depression, the best way is to have a good rest. Go for a movie of ur interest, listen to music, chat with friends on any other thing which u like the most & the time u get re-energised get back to study.
10. Few things can improve your grades easily. They are clarity, good presentation, time management during exam sessions, explanation with diagrams and graphs rather than paragraphs of theory and writing answers you know properly first. While checking the board copies i have felt that the teachers generally have a serious look on ur first few answers, if those r found perfect than chances r there that they might overlook a few mistakes made in between. Don’t waste much time on any questions which are confusing.
Once you have a game plan its time to get to work. People can suggest u various plans on how to prepare for the exams. But remember its important to come up with a system that works for u. I have heard many people saying, ‘that the life would not get over just with this exam, u would get lots of opportunity to prove yourself’. Don’t take these words as an excuse of not doing hard work. Remember the board gives u only one chance, second chance is provided to only those who get supplementary or r a failure.
If u r not satisfied with the your performancein the board exams there is no way to improve it. So analyse urself, keep a record of ur abilities, prepare well for the exams, set a goal and go for it.............. and taste Success.
All the best for your Board Exams.
